A Smooth Transition

Here are some things to consider as you make the move to your new home. I can suggest local professionals for many of these services...

4 Weeks Before Your Move:

  • Contact and contract with a reputable moving company. I have a partnership agreement with VanLines so I can help you get a discount.
  • Have school records transferred. If you need help contacting the correct school district or are planning on homeschooling, let me know. I homeschooled in Kitsap County for 11 years and now have 3 active kids in 3 active schools!
  • Arrange to transfer medical, dental and other important records.
  • Prepare to transfer your homeowners and auto insurance to be sure you will be covered for any unforeseen disasters.
  • Hold a garage sale to get rid of unneeded items; when your done- donate. Bless those with less and make your burden lighter!
  • Have a notebook with a pocket area to take note of items you need and to keep track of moving-related expenses. Check with your accountant to find out what expenses will be deductible.

3 Weeks Before Your Move

  • Obtain and mail change-of-address cards to the post office, subscriptions, credit card companies and important contacts.

2 Weeks Before Your Move

  • Arrange for final utility reading at your former residence the day after your move and have utilities and phone turned on at you new home the day before you move in. Yes, you may end up paying a few dollars for someone else's utilities use, but you will be sure you have active heat, lights and water for your move in and move out.
  • Close or transfer bank accounts. Have new checks mailed to your new homebank, not to your new address.
  • Terminate newspaper delivery.
  • Arrange for transfer of vehicle licenses and driver's licenses.
  • Have an extra supply of prescription medications for the next four weeks.
  • Call to schedule a final walk-through of your new home to make sure everything is in order.

Week of Your Move

  • Keep valuable financial records and personal papers with you; do not pack them with the rest of your household goods.
  • Schedule how you would like to transfer keys.
  • On closing day, the home purchase documents record and the home is yours.
  • Time to move in!

I have been a fan of flylady.net for years. She is a regular lady that has a silly website that is tremendously helpful to get your home in order.

When it was time for me to move, I followed many of her tips found here. I didn't use all of them, but the most helpful thing I did, was each day for the 3 weeks prior, I would pack up anything we wouldn't need until we got to our new home.

Each room had a a code (KIT meant kitchen- it wasn't a tough code) and each box would be numbered. The first box I packed from the kitchen had a code KIT1 on it. The second box had KIT2 on it. The last box happened to be KIT11.

When we moved all the boxes to the new home, I knew that I just had to unpack backwards. So the first box to unpack- KIT11.This box contained the stuff I couldn't live without for even a day.
